Affiliate marketing has become a booming business model, offering anyone with an internet connection the ability to earn passive income by promoting products or services they believe in. Whether you’re looking for a side hustle or a full-time gig, affiliate marketing presents numerous opportunities for those willing to put in the work. In this post, I’ll walk you through what affiliate marketing is, how to get started, and how you don’t need to be an influencer to make a splash in the industry.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a partnership between a business and an individual (the affiliate). The affiliate earns a commission by promoting the company’s products or services, directing potential customers through a unique affiliate link, oftentimes providing discounts to the referred customer. When a customer makes a purchase through that link, they save money and affiliate gets paid a kickback for the referral.

It’s a win-win-win model—companies get new customers, the customer saves money, and affiliates get paid for their effort. Affiliate marketing requires strategy, effort, and time to see significant returns.

How to Get Into Affiliate Marketing

  1. Your Niche:

Start by identifying a niche or industry you’re passionate about or have knowledge in. This could range from wellness to fitness to tech gadgets, beauty, or even sustainable living. The more specific your niche, the easier it will be to target the right audience. Oftentimes, your niche finds you. It takes time and effort, like throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks with the audience. Your audience will tell you what resonates with them the most.

  1. Find Affiliate Programs:

There are many different types of affiliate programs. Many companies offer affiliate programs directly on their websites, or you can join an affiliate network like Amazon Associates, ShareASale, or ClickBank. These platforms have a variety of brands and products for affiliates to choose from. Other affiliate programs require an invitation from a referring affiliate or the company itself.

There are so many things to look for when partnering with a brand:

  • 1. Competitive commission rates – one thing I have learned about commission is that brands will handle it all very differently. My #1 partner Modere requires an invitation to the program from a referring affiliate and pays commissions every time the customer orders, regardless of whether it’s the first, 10th or 100th time ordering. Another one of my partners pays only 1 time commission (first order) with a commission minimum of $50 in an escrow in order to be paid out (not my favorite but I trust the brand so much that it doesn’t matter to me as long as I’m helping recommend a quality product).
  • 2. Discount for your referred customer
  • 3. Good reviews
  • 4. Products you genuinely use and want to promote
  1. Create Valuable Content:

Whether through blog posts, YouTube videos, or social media, *OR EVEN WORD OF MOUTH* the key is sharing content that informs, educates, or entertains your audience. Focus on solving problems or sharing experiences. Incorporate your affiliate links in a way that is natural and authentic. I personally attribute a lot of my sales more to listening than to talking. I love sharing things I love. It’s no different than the way I would recommend my favorite restaurant or movie that I just saw. You do not need to be an influencer to do well with affiliate marketing as long as you know how to talk to people and have a caring heart to help provide solutions to their problems.

  1. Audience and Conversation:

As mentioned, you don’t need to be a massive influencer to succeed in affiliate marketing, but building a loyal audience will help drive more conversions. Consistently engage with your audience by answering questions, posting content regularly, and building a community. We oftentimes get lost in the goal of how many followers we want, rather than focusing on fostering a relationship with the followers we have in this very moment.

  1. Track Performance:

Most affiliate programs offer tracking tools so you can see which links are driving sales. Analyze this data and adjust your strategy to improve results.

Building Partnerships for Long-Term Success

To thrive in affiliate marketing, you’ll need to build strong relationships with the brands you partner with.

– Reach Out to Brands Directly: If there’s a brand you love and they don’t have an official affiliate program, reach out! Sometimes, companies are willing to set up private arrangements with affiliates who are passionate about their products.

– Foster Long-Term Collaborations: Once you’re an affiliate, don’t stop at sharing links. Build rapport with the brand by providing feedback, offering to create content that suits their goals, or suggesting joint ventures, like webinars or giveaways.

– Stay Transparent: Being upfront with your audience that you’ll earn a commission from their purchases helps build trust. Authenticity is key to long-term success in affiliate marketing. I have actually terminated partnerships with brands who were not servicing the customers well or changing the ingredients in their products. Integrity is so important.

My Journey Finding my way to Affiliate Marketing

Honestly, affiliate marketing found me. When I first started exploring affiliate marketing, I didn’t have a massive online presence or consider myself an influencer. What I had was a passion for certain products and the desire to share them with others based on how they helped me navigate a journey of a million health challenges. In the beginning, I personally had the goal to fund my website with what is around $250 per year –  and now I’m running 5 figures per month in volume. I quickly realized that affiliate marketing isn’t about how many followers you have—it’s about how well you understand your audience and create value for them as well has real life conversations – being a person who cares. Truly anyone can do this.

Through trial and error, I’ve built partnerships with brands whose values align with mine. By focusing on quality being authentic in my recommendations, I’ve been able to generate income and help others find solutions to their needs. It has led me to mentor many others of all backgrounds, follower counts and interests in this space so that they can achieve their goals of either filling their gas once a week or paying their mortgage.

The beauty of affiliate marketing is that it’s open to anyone. You don’t need to be a social media celebrity to do well in this space. What you do need is a willingness to learn, persistence, and a clear understanding of the products you’re promoting.

You Don’t Need to Be an Influencer to Succeed

If you haven’t read this part enough yet! LOL. This is one of the biggest myths in affiliate marketing. You don’t need hundreds of thousands of followers to generate significant income. What you need is:

– An audience who trusts your opinions.

– A clear voice that can speak to the benefits of the products or services you’re promoting.

– Consistency in creating content that adds value to your audience.

Affiliate marketing is for anyone—whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a professional, or a college student. It’s about aligning with the right brands and understanding how to present products in a way that resonates with your audience.
